A thrilling comparison of high school marching bands
September 23, 2007
Which would you prefer to watch for an hour and a half?
Band Style: Suburban
Structure: Formal, Proud
Size: Very Large
Venues (aside from football games): Presidential Inauguration Parades, NFL Halftime Shows
Uniforms: Crisp, Clean, Neat, Glittering
Notes: A traditional, profound performance. Plays classics, anthems, with ease and class. Musicians march with perfected precision. Brings nationalists to tears.
Band Style: Urban
Structure: Informal, Animated
Size: Medium to Small
Venues (aside from football games): Walt Disney World “Magic Music Days” Parade, New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Uniforms: Matte, Loose hair, No hats
Notes: A modern, lively show. Rocks out to Bon Jovi. Musicians dance powerfully while delivering an impressive sound. Gymnastics included, and not only from the majorettes.

I think I’d choose the latter.
And that last picture? Holy hell.

I think the second band would be more interesting to watch. I love that they’ve got bari saxes front and center-ish. Our school never let ours play in the marches.

I think I saw them on Good Morning America!
I love watching flavorful bands. I get chills.

MUCH fun. My daughter graduated in 2006 and has exited the whole HS marching competition field, but I never missed a competition and LOVED sitting in those bleachers no matter the weather. I really miss it!

I went to North Hills. I almost joined flagline. Almost.
