A Wedding

November 3, 2006

This past weekend marked a very important event. Yes, I’ve been to weddings. However, this was not the marriage of a distant cousin, or a dad’s friend’s daughter, or a mother’s coworker’s son. This was the first time I’ve witnessed the union of a couple, both of whom were relatively the same age as me.

This, of course, came after the news that one of my friends at college, who happens to be younger than me, became engaged last month. This is in addition to several high school friends and acquaintances who have already taken the plunge.

But back to the wedding. It was incredibly beautiful, and an incredible party. The flowers, the bridesmaid’s dresses, the decorations, were all the color of fall. Everything was vibrant red and green and orange. The bride was stunning. She had one of those veils that flowed as long as the train of her dress, which was probably long enough to transport 20 small children.

They were deliriously in love. They’ve already been together for quite a while, surviving through years of college and hours of distance.

And as I watched them dance their first dance together, I couldn’t help but think… courage. That kind of commitment takes courage. And strength. Yes, it takes love and faith and blah blah blah. But it seems like there are so few people, couples, who are willing to make that effort anymore. Maybe it’s the prospect of something better coming along, or maybe it’s the inability to handle an individual for more than three years.

I just love seeing that people can still make it.
