      Airport errand

      November 18, 2006

I’m currently sitting at Gate C56 at Pittsburgh International Airport, waiting to drop off my grandfather who will be spending Thanksgiving with my aunt in New York, and wishing that I could hop on one of the planes and take off to, oh I don’t know, Spain. But only for a couple days.

I like airports. My fear of flying has recently (as in, within the past hour) been downgraded to the fear of accompanying an old man to his flight, as security was an absolute nightmare.

“Sweetheart, tell your grandfather he needs to take off his shoes. Does he have his I.D.? Does he have any metal in his pocket? HEY POPS, DO YOU HAVE ANY METAL IN YOUR POCKET? REMOVE YOUR COAT, PLEASE! Can he hear me, young lady?”

Yes, he can hear you, sir, but he isn’t used to other old men who he’s never seen before in his life calling him “pops.”

But after that 47 seconds of frenzy, we were able to rest and retie shoelaces, as we were an hour and a half early for boarding. And within the next 20 minutes, I’ll be on my way to the Sheraton Hotel in Pittsburgh, where I will spend the rest of the afternoon preparing for a formal and thinking back, contentedly, to the days of prom.
