      Cafe du Jour

      August 22, 2007

I went to Cafe du Jour this evening under the recommendation of Cynthia Closkey, and my, was it lovely.

The only problem I had was, when presented with this meal, baked brie and sliced apple with spring honey and a berry reduction (wha?), I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. Do you spread? Do you dip? Do you layer? I’ve never been too cultured with food. I enjoy filet mignon on a similar level with Pop-Tarts.

I spent most of my time looking around, it was so pretty, and once I got a flow going with the food, I was in a very happy place. And? It was cheap. Dinner and dessert for $10. That, and the staff was so sweet, it was almost more comfortable being there alone.

I may have found a first favorite restaurant.

It’s hard to eat there in the summer (HOT), but I think it’s the perfect place to drink tea and write. If it’s not crowded.

Looks super amazing. Where is it? Do they have funny hours of operation? I need to go there!

Jennie - It’s right on Carson, between 10th and 11th! Actually, it’s only open for lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays, but every other day they’re open 11:30 to 10pm. I highly recommend it.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I love going there, and I like the BYOB policy b/c it keeps everything affordable. I’ve never had the chance to eat in the courtyard out back, but your photos make it clear it’s even better there. The owners and staff are charming, so low-key and sweet. Now I need to plan my next visit there too.

Look at you making all kinds of connections! That food looks delicious but I would also have NO idea how to eat it.

Marianne - I’m so glad I’m not alone. Really. I felt like an ass.

Jennie - GENIUS! We’re going to have a whole list of places to go!:)

That dish reminds me of those places where they have a dozen different utensils that make you wonder who the hell had so much time on his hands to invent so many ways to eat fish.

And the way the food is arranged reminds me of Odie from Garfield.

Where is this at? I need to get out and start exploring some new places here in Pittsburgh.

I’ve never eaten any where like that before. Then again, I am a very picky eater and probably wouldn’t order any thing off of the menu. The dish looks annoying perfect (as Julia Roberts would put) and I’m glad you enjoyed it.

        I would’ve thought a place like that would cost $50 a plate!

Leslie - lol! It is sort of dog-like.

Jesse - Right on Carson. There’s a lot of little hidden places on the South Side.

Jake - It’s BYOB, which keeps the food cheap. I’m usually pretty picky also, but I was impressed.

I grew up in Pittsburgh - left around the age you arrived. I needed a bigger town. But it so resonates, and gave me so much. Here are a couple of posts about it - you can delete if you think I’m being self-promoting - I just thought you’d be interested. Give my love to the Incline… the biggest treat of my childhood!

Rachel that food looks awesome! Especially for $10. Why don’t I live in Pittsburgh again? We could be roommates.
