Who moved my cheese?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

A lot of jobs I’ve had have influenced certain qualities in myself, but not in ways I would’ve guessed when I took them. Working as a maid in a retirement home resulted in my tendency to rarely be grossed out by anything. Working as a college tour guide gave me the remarkable ability to [...]

Nostalgia

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

“yesterday i woke up early and babysat, drove to the mall, grabbed some jones soda, and then babysat again till 11. i definatly need to find a job. stupid college students took them all. hey that’ll be me next year! yay! i decided im staying close to home, and i would like to get [...]

It’s like they read my blog

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

I received another Christmas card from one of my dearly beloved newspaper customers this morning. I took it out of my mailbox on my way home from the restaurant job this afternoon.
Usually, after working at the restaurant all morning, which is immediately after I finish my paper route in the middle of the night, [...]

Dearest daily newspaper consumers

Monday, December 17th, 2007

I’m well aware of the person you think I am, as my general idea would have been similar if I had ever wondered how the newspaper got into my front yard every morning before I decided to become your delivery girl. But please, and especially for the elderly among us, let me clarify.
It is [...]

Heels! HEELS!

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Chatham University
I picked up a hostessing job at a downtown restaurant, which is at least slightly more classy than my daily 3am paper route. While I’m much more inclined to throw on baggy jeans and a t-shirt with Brooks, my familiar attire wasn’t going to work. Not nearly. So I dragged my sister to [...]

Christmas work

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

Around this time of year, my night job, delivering newspapers to a rather large neighborhood, entails finding mass quantities of cheap Christmas cards and filling out around 300 of them to send out one night in hopes they are returned with some Christmas joy. That is green. And rhymes with honey.
I’ve been doing this [...]

Unfair!

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

My mom tricked me into catering a downtown function earlier this evening. I went out to the new Forever 21 that just opened up at my mall and purchased a black skirt, black tights, and a black headband to wear with my black heels and my mother’s black shirt. That’s about as festive as [...]

Crafty things

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

I’m very inspired by craft-related websites such as this one, sites that are all color and cleanliness. I still have a lot to learn on the subjects of sewing and artistry, but since I started assisting a seamstress at a bridal salon this summer, I always have to be working on something.
Here are some [...]

Deja vu

Friday, May 18th, 2007

A couple months ago I did an entry with all of my high school dance pictures. The very first one is from my 9th grade semi-formal, which I went to with Derrick, who I am now seeing seven years later.
Derrick’s little sister, Rachel, had her “semi” tonight, and I went to their house beforehand [...]

Flashdance

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

A bunch of high school kids came to the restaurant I work at last night for dinner. They were all decked out in frilly dresses and coordinating tuxes. I was somewhat surprised since it’s neither prom nor homecoming season, but watching them talk and take pictures brought back memories and I really missed wearing [...]

On Christmas

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

God definitely has it out for me on Christmas. I’m still convinced that I deserve miserable Decembers due to the fact that since I turned nine, I abandoned spending no less than 80 minutes before bed pointing out no less than 80 items that needed blessings that day. Like that guy I saw on [...]

Great job!

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

I’ve had eight jobs in the past eight years. Here, I will summarize them in eight words.
Title: University Admissions Office
Amazing recommendations and essays? Don’t care. SAT’s, bitch.
Title: Junior High Lacrosse Coach
Made me want to have eighteen daughters. Word.
Title: Summer Camp Counselor
Hundred+ degrees always. Picked ticks off small children.
Title: Abercrombie and Fitch Sales Representative
Overpriced [...]

Pre-season

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Tonight kicked off the beginning of my “spring job” (is it even winter yet?) - head coach of a girls’ lacrosse team - for the second season. We held a meeting for the parents of my upcoming players, and as usual, they came prepared with many, many questions regarding the safety of their daughters [...]

The numbers game

Monday, September 25th, 2006

About once a year, me and my friends drive to a local amusement park and work two 16-hour days as a fundraiser. Usually, they have us working the kiddie rides or carousels. This year, I was assigned to hold a height-stick in front of one of those large, rickety, 240-foot falling contraptions. I like [...]

The lightning storms

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

Tomorrow I will attend my first Yankees game. It will probably be nice and hot. And extremely unexciting. Because it’s baseball. But what is the opposite of unexciting around here? The lightning storms.
At home, when lightning strikes, it is usually just ignored and accepted as a passing storm. No one bothers to give it any [...]

I’m melting

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

It’s going to top out at about 116 degrees (47 degrees celsius) today, with no hope of rain or air conditioning. It’s so hot, that they cancelled “lacrosse” and “soccer” and instead are having “pool” and “sprinkler.”
Because of the extreme heat, everything has become so au natural that I feel as if we’re living [...]

Falling behind

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

I’m so backed up. Usually, during the school year, I have the time to blog every day but nowhere near the content. I spend hours in my dorm room, wishing for repeats of SVU and hoping that whatever paper I owe within the next 24 hours will write itself. Quickly. So I can edit [...]

All camp dance

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

The “all camp dance” happens every two weeks and is accompanied by a theme, which none of the kids regard. The counselors, coaches, and staff, however, usually go all out and spend at least the hour beforehand putting together a costume that will at least somewhat pass as recognizable.

Last night’s theme was “superheroes and villains.” [...]

Good practice

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

My duties this weekend have been switched. While most of the older kids leave camp for the weekend, the youngest ones (aged seven through nine) who have no means of a quick vacation hang around, eat ice cream, and watch Harry Potter. Likewise, while most of the underaged staff saunter off to find bars [...]
