Saturday, October 20th, 2007This is my sister, Molly. She’s 13.
Earlier this summer, before entering 8th grade, Molly found out that her best friend had a lump on her brain. A few weeks later, the lump was found to be cancerous. In these past five months, Molly has matured quicker and more completely than I thought possible in [...]
Pittsburgh on Google Street View
Tuesday, October 9th, 2007 Pittsburgh is on Street View. I haven’t really dug through it yet, and so have yet to find individuals being hit by cars or pigeons being kicked by individuals, but they seem to have covered the city pretty thoroughly.
And hey! Here’s the Steel Phantom!
And my previous place of employment!
And the sanctuary!
Also, speaking of Pittsburgh, [...]
Creative Marathon
Sunday, September 30th, 2007The Creative Treehouse held the 24 Hour Creative Marathon over the past two days. From Friday to Saturday night, with a 24 hour time limit, artists gathered to create pieces based on a theme (this time’s was “lost and found”). The event culminated in a public gallery showing (during which time the finished works [...]
Out of the Darkness

A thrilling comparison of high school marching bands
Sunday, September 23rd, 2007 Which would you prefer to watch for an hour and a half?
Band Style: Suburban
Structure: Formal, Proud
Size: Very Large
Venues (aside from football games): Presidential Inauguration Parades, NFL Halftime Shows
Uniforms: Crisp, Clean, Neat, Glittering
Notes: A traditional, profound performance. Plays classics, anthems, with ease and class. Musicians march with perfected precision. Brings [...]
Raising smaller voices: Facebook as a medium
Wednesday, September 19th, 2007 Once in a while, I creep on over to my high school alma mater’s Facebook group to check changes and catch gossip through the eyes of the students. My findings are usually pretty insignificant:
Plaster falling from ceilings: Check.
Classroom Shortages: Check.
Constant matball: Yes!
On my last visit, about a month ago, I noticed a wall post [...]
Did my heart love till now?
Sunday, September 9th, 2007Spent the day at the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival.
Eating for an audience
Thursday, September 6th, 2007 Viddler had this contest during the month of August in which they welcomed members to upload videos of themselves eating and/or drinking various meals they enjoyed (”MealTodays”). The Viddler gang then chose their favorite nine and, with the help of a panel, voted for the winner. The prize is an iPhone.
I did a documentary-type [...]
Cafe du Jour
Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007I went to Cafe du Jour this evening under the recommendation of Cynthia Closkey, and my, was it lovely.
The only problem I had was, when presented with this meal, baked brie and sliced apple with spring honey and a berry reduction (wha?), I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. Do you spread? [...]
Some data worth remembering
Sunday, August 19th, 2007A session at the conference made some video shorts related to the idea of “why you chose the shirt you’re wearing.” Chris Brogan posted all five on his site. I am in the first one, but my favorite (an impromptu comedy about alternative definitions of techie terms), which has nothing to do with the [...]
Alive in Baghdad
Sunday, August 19th, 2007Here are Brian Conley and Steve Wyshywaniuk, the guys from Alive in Baghdad, which is a video blog documenting the voices, and daily life, of Iraqis.
They led a discussion and presented a clip, this clip, which is a very moving account of the conflicts (emotional and physical) of the children who were forced to [...]
Let’s acknowledge the lunch line
Saturday, August 18th, 2007Hey look! It’s Justin!
The presentations so far have been fantastic, including memorable displays by Chris Brogan (Session: Presentation Hacks) and Michael Domingo (Session: Just.Press.Record). Everything is very interactive, the people here are extremely diverse, and it’s overall already becoming a memorable event.
PodCamp Pittsburgh, Day 1, and a clumsy first attempt at vidcasting
Saturday, August 18th, 2007 I’m currently writing from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Success!
The entire event is being streamed thanks to Justin.tv. You can watch along here. You know, if you’re interested.
Podcamp Pittsburgh Day Zero
Friday, August 17th, 2007So, Podcamp Pittsburgh is this weekend, which is an unconference for Pittsburgh bloggers and vloggers and new media enthusiasts. This is a good opportunity for me to meet people, since I haven’t a real friend who knows what a podcast is. This also means that I have no one to cling to during these [...]
The fountains at PPG place
Sunday, June 17th, 2007 I’d like to be seven again, and have my only anxiety be the anticipation of the fountains coming back to life, and whether or not I’d be near a spot where the water would shoot out the hardest.
Click here for the full album.
Swoon!
Saturday, June 16th, 2007 “Four daredevils tell a spectacular story of love, loss, joy and freedom up on high. Through a whirlwind of dance and movement on 12 foot high flexible poles, the vibrantly costumed couples transcend past, present and future as they move together and apart.”
Saw this show at the Arts Festival this afternoon. [...]
Laxburgh
Monday, June 11th, 2007The Pittsburgh chapter of US Lacrosse is finally launching a website.
Edgewood Country Club held a banquet to recognize outstanding players from the city and surrounding areas and to announce the website.
I brought my sister and one of my players who was being awarded. Of course, they were examples of maturity.
The Pittsburgh Women’s Blogging Society
Sunday, June 10th, 2007 I was invited to be a contributor at “the official blog for Pittsburgh’s female blogging community.” I think the only thing more flattering than being asked to add to a collaborative blog is being placed on a team of writers who are probably way cooler than I am.
And, I mean, being able to read [...]
Radical Writer Mamas
Monday, April 23rd, 2007 I went out to meet Ariel Gore, China Martens, and Annie Downey at a book signing tonight, and as I expected, they kicked ass.
They are touring together on their Radical Writer Mamas tour, and were extremely interesting to listen to. I picked up How to Become a Famous Writer Before You’re Dead by Gore [...]
High Points
Saturday, January 20th, 2007 We’re finally wired!
The cable and internet guys came earlier yesterday afternoon and left no less than three hours later. Apparently, all of our wires were bad. They shut down the main street in front of the apartment for a good 15 minutes to do whatever it is they do to the pole across the [...]
