Heels! HEELS!
December 14, 2007
I picked up a hostessing job at a downtown restaurant, which is at least slightly more classy than my daily 3am paper route. While I’m much more inclined to throw on baggy jeans and a t-shirt with Brooks, my familiar attire wasn’t going to work. Not nearly. So I dragged my sister to the mall last night to help me pick out a few things, as I’m clueless in the subject of taking care of myself.
I’ll say here that me and my sister are opposites in terms of shopping. I hate it. You want me to go shopping with you? I won’t. Sorry. My sister though? Weekly. And with precision.
I spent about an hour in a dressing room as Molly slung foreign items over the door — gray pants, long sweaters, things made of tweed. Most of the time, I sent them flying right back over at her. Ruffles? Ruffles?!
Once I got a few outfits together, we circled the store for shoes, and landed on two pairs of heels, black and brown, and purple ballerina flats.
I tested out the black ones this afternoon, and by the time I was done working and standing on the concrete floor of the parking garage overlooking the Allegheny, I had every intention of volleying them into the river.

So what is this, your eighth job?
December 14th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
Congrats on the new gig. :)
I am a very talented shopper… sales are love. I am the one dragging my less enthusiastic friends into the dressing room, but they always end up saying “its easier when you come”… now if I could only get paid for That!!

OUCH! I also learned the hard way to never break in new shoes when I am going to be on my feet for several hours at a time. And the time I did it I couldn’t wear those shoes again for a very long time. fear and pain. Other than the foot ouch I hope the new job went well.

Throw off your shackles, Rachel. Throw off your shackles.
December 15th, 2007 at 1:33 am
hee hee! you just posted a comment at my place. I am not the only late night troller. :)

When do you sleep?!
December 15th, 2007 at 1:49 am
Lisa - When I drive.
December 15th, 2007 at 5:14 am
Wow, I envy your energy…and well, you just answered my question too, I wanted to ask when do you sleep…lol
Can you model for those heels and take some pics? I’m sure you look nice on it… ;)

Well that’s the most a girl’s ever made me blush.

In college I swore by big, chunky heels even though they made my poor runner’s knees cry most of the time; most of the time I ventured through Oakland in my favorite boots — chocolate brown with a two inch heel. They were super comfy once I broke them in, but then I met a pair of ballet flats, and we’ve been in love ever since.

I couldn’t agree more with you on the whole idea of shopping. Although I used to be exactly like your sister. I’m not sure what changed me, but I’m convinced it was a change for the better!
Also, screw heels! They are only good for looking sexy on one to three hour occasions. Anything more than that is just not worth the effort.

The purple ballerina flats sound adorable. And wearing heels? will get easier with practice.
December 15th, 2007 at 11:11 am
This is what sisters are made for. I am the same way with mine. She is 5 years younger… but I call HER for advice! ;)

Heels can be a killer. I love every single pair of them but I restrict myself to wearing them once a week.
December 15th, 2007 at 11:57 am
This is why all my jobs allow me to wear sweats and sandals.
K.

I hate shopping too and am completely useless at it - I buy stuff, get it home, find it looks different at home, then take it back!
And I’m too tall for heels - well, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. I trip over enough without them!
December 15th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
That’s part of the reason that I love my job. Being a mom has no dress code. In fact, I can even go to the pediatrician in sweats and clogs. There are entire days that I don’t even wear a bra.
December 15th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Step away from the heels, woman. Just step away from them. Restaurant jobs were not made for cute, they were made for practical.
December 15th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
I like getting new stuff, but I hate shopping for it. I’m weird like that.
I love heels. I just hate how they make my feet hurt.
December 15th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
Yeah I hate shopping. And heels! And shopping in them. Or even shopping in “wedges.” Because you’re bound to fall. There’s usually no traction whatsoever! That’s great that you have a sister that’s willing to help you out though :D
December 16th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Talk about role reversal - my sister (also Molly) loathes shopping whereas I’m never quite so happy as I am when I’m shopping.
December 16th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
I am sure you were exhausted - your poor feet! I hope you can get some rest today…fashion sucks sometimes doesn’t it?
December 16th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Tweed blows.
It’s so fucking ITCHY.
December 16th, 2007 at 5:14 pm
I’m sensible - I never wear heels :P
December 17th, 2007 at 2:33 am
Tweed?! Ruffles?!
Urgh.
December 17th, 2007 at 5:18 am
Apparently, while I may have (doubtfully) gotten wiser with age, my heel walking (teetering) skills have diminished a heck of a lot.
December 17th, 2007 at 11:48 am
Tweed and ruffles on your heels? Cause that would be cute.
Wanna see pictures!
December 17th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
Comfort for the sake of fashion–haven’t you heard this rule to live by? ;-) Heels are such a burden, but I couldn’t do without them, personally.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
I just bought a similar pair of shoes and now wish I had bought more practical ones.
December 19th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
It sounds like shopping with my mother. Complete with ruffles and the explanation that it looks MUCH cuter on.
On what, exactly? On fire?
December 19th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
alianora - LMAO!
December 20th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
and when you read alianora’s comment you have to keep in mind that she only wears jeans and converse or hiking boots. Although there was a knee high boot phase while she was in college if I remember correctly.
