Just a moment
November 8, 2007
The professor is struggling to get the overhead projector to work. This happens at least once a week, in any given class. She turns it on. The blue screen comes up. There’s sound, no picture. She stares at it, exasperated, and turns to the class. “Are any of you technologically inclined?” Nope! We don’t know computers here!
Us students are rowdy today. That means we’re actually talking to each other. A boy in brown corduroy on the right side of the room is telling a story about alcohol and elephants. There’s a boy to the left of me in a leather jacket, straining to hear. He shouts back, “WHAT! HA! I just caught the end of that, man!”
The boy in corduroy has an audience, and he is happy. “Hey man,” he says, “Come down here!” The boy in the leather jacket makes his way across the room. I think they’ll be friends.
Tonight is Blogfest 12 in Pittsburgh. Did you know that Pittsburgh is the third bloggiest city in the country? There are some good looking people involved in this. I’ll show you sometime.

I think there’s an overhead projector problem in every university.
There was better luck in elementary school with those desk projectors and VCR’s.

That is SO CUTE. Aww.

I miss the awkwardness of the college classes where nobody talks to one another. Then again, maybe it’s just me — it once took me an entire semester to get the name of a guy I sat next to [and even once, shared animal cookies with].
Though I don’t miss the instructors who couldn’t get the blackboards to work. [Not kidding. Those motor-driven boards? Apparently professor-proof.]

I was going to comment but Robert took the words right out of my mouth. So I will just go with: ditto that!

Aw, yay for new friends.
I go to a smaller university, so everyone tends to know each other here.

I go to a small school with even smaller classes, everyone knows each other which usually leads to nonstop talking within the class room. Lucky for us, our teachers are laid back and talkative as well.
Wow…overhead projectors…they still make those.

I think you are referring to Andrew Stockey in the last paragraph, no?
It was great to finally meet you formally and in person!

That was all you, Woy.

I work for OIT (Office of Information and Technology) at my school and I always slink down in my chair when they’re having problems in class and need someone to help. Haha.

Last year I taught my first college-level course, and none of the students’ computer skills were particularly proficient. Half of them were unfamiliar with blogging and one of them had never sent an email. Reading this I’m realizing…maybe they were just lying to me.
