The lighter test
November 11, 2006
Minutes ago, as I struggled to come up with an idea for a post topic, I sat swiveling on Derrick’s computer chair while simultaneously sparking a lighter and blowing out the flame. Spin. Spark. Blow. Spin. Spark. Blow.
He watched for a moment, and with quick thought, took the lighter and announced that he was going to perform “the test.”
“What test?”
At that, he instantly ignited the small flame and moved it close to my face. The same flame I had sat extinguishing without thought moments before, I was suddenly dodging. I whimpered small panics and attempted to swat the thing away from my face like a cat. He blew out the flame, smiled, and said, “You failed.”
I stared, confused. He explained. Apparantly, every girl he had “tested” had freaked out (much like I had) at the approach of the tiny flame, rather than just continuing to look forward and blowing the damn thing out. On the other hand, every guy had done just the opposite — “Hmmm, flame in my face. Puff.”
Why is that? Are girls conditioned to overreact, or were all of these girls in particular (me included) just needlessly jumpy?
