The Power of Power
September 13, 2005
I woke up about an hour before class. After checking my e-mail, my screen suddenly dimmed, and my laptop switched to battery power. I figured that using power strips plugged into power strips plugged into power strips finally overloaded the one outlet I have everything plugged into.
I opened our door to a surprisingly black hallway, students already running a-flashlight-muck in the darkness. I began making the treck to the other side of campus, thinking it was only my building that had a shortage. Although losing electricity is a definate inconvience, I was openly accepting of the change in routine. Class was cancelled.
After waking up unnecessarily after the one night I was able to fall asleep before four, and even though I was fine being six hours away from Pittsburgh last year at a college which I liked a bit less, and even though I knew it would all last a whole two hours, and even though I’m 19, the entire time I was laying in my much-too-high bed with “When I’m Gone” and “Here Without You” and “Be Like That” streaming out of my iRiver, the only thing I could think was, “Man, I hope this means I can go home.”

I always like power outages for some reason, as long as the power doesn’t stay off for too long :)
Whenever we have power outages though at school, class is never cancelled :( You were lucky to have yours cancelled.
Anyways, take care.

How long was the power out? What was the reason for it? I bet you do miss home cooked meals! Do you at least have good food on campus?

Heh thats the college life for you eh? Aww.. I say stick it out, it takes a while to adjust to stuff but ehh if you wanna go home then.. DO IT.

rachel, I am always in awe of how you write… you seem to know very well how to portray what you are thinking, what you are feeling, in just a few, powerful sentences.
just thought I’d tell you that. it isn’t often I come across people with this gift. :)

Power outages are kinda cool, sometimes. Especially when it aids in getting classes cancelled. hah

When I started reading your entry, I thought you fried the power with your very own laptop ‘connection’, lol. (If so, you go girl). Do you have troubles sleeping? I hate it when I have that, I hope it’ll go back to normal soon. It’s very ignorant.
The power went off at my school last year… An accident happened with some HUGE constructiontruck… it fell on the power lines in the middle of the city. The whole center of Rotterdam just went blank. Luckily I slept at Koen that day, so I was able to go back home with the boat.
School got cancelled for the whole day, since the accident would take MANY hours of repairing… everybody who had to go home by train, was less happy. Hehe, just remembered this.
Thank you for your comment but since I’m new into photography, I still think all my classes are exciting! I guess that’ll change over the year, but not yet. *hug*

I’ve been looking intently at the notes on your layout for a while, it is entertaining me, and so I do feel amused. It is a first time, that I am amused by a layout. ( Ah how deprived I may seem to be. ) Anyway moving along to the comments,
I do hope you can get home too. I like the part of power strips being plugged to more power strips. Lol.
Thanks for the comment.=)

I never liked power outages, because it brings so much inconvenience. Imagine not being able to use the computer, television or the lights. Ah well, I can still read with a torchlight for entertainment. :P Hehe.

I agree with the first comment! I kind of like electric outages for some reason.. And yeah - english losers rule!! Woo! =)

I love poweroutages for some reason. They’re fun. That’s cool that your class was cancelled!
September 14th, 2005 at 1:51 pm
I used to get power outages a lot, eespecially during the winter. I don’t know why, haha. Sometimes it’s only my block that gets it, which annoys me.
September 14th, 2005 at 4:16 pm
I hate power outages, but when they get me out of class I’m all for them!
September 14th, 2005 at 5:03 pm
I like your writing.
September 14th, 2005 at 5:32 pm
I don’t really like when the power goes out, it freaks me out…but cool that you got to miss classes x)
September 14th, 2005 at 10:23 pm
Shortages make people do weird things. Not like what you were doing WAS weird, but…you know.

I still remember the great blackout of NY. It was pretty insane. We didn’t have power for the whole night, and everyone thought it was a terrorist act. I was so relieved that I didn’t have to work that day. If so, I would probably have been stranded in NYC and crying. I don’t mind short power outages though. :)
I like your site. I went to college in Pittsburgh.
September 15th, 2005 at 2:13 am
Hey, thanks for the comment! Just letting you know that my site IS now up and running!!
September 15th, 2005 at 11:01 pm
You have a laptop. That is awesome. Power went out? Wow, must have been quite a convenience although it would have been better if you needn’t have woken up. Class cancellation–yay. It’s so much easier with class attendance in college than high school, ick.

I remember when my roommate made the power go out on our floor by plugging her hairdryer into the socket in our room instead of the one in the bathroom. I was like, didn’t you read the electrical information in the packet they sent us??? XD
We have similar names. That’s cool. It’s nice to come across someone who knows how to use words.

sorry girl for not coming here often i hope college have been somewhat a blast for you? is Iriver like an IPOD?
September 16th, 2005 at 1:59 pm
I hope you’re feeling better after everything.
By the way, I’ve been reading since you opened. Your writing is inspirational. When is your first book coming out? And when can I preorder a copy?:-)

I think there’s something really comforting about power outages. There was one day when my entire college campus had power out at 1 pm — classes were cancelled or met outside; we ate by candlelight that evening in the dining hall… that day is strangely one of my favorite college memories :D
September 16th, 2005 at 5:40 pm
Its cool that your class got cancelled :)
Having no power can sometimes be fun!

That last paragraph is just classic! :)
I’m dreading the day when I have to *seriously* clean my room, instead of just hiding things in boxes under the grand piano, because that day will involve unplugging everything and untangling the entire system, which no one but me can ever understand. Three of my four surge protectors are entwined in a loving embrace with each other and various other power cords that, for lack of length, have to be laid out a certain way… it’s awful. Thank god my grandpa knows all about electricity, he wired the apartment in a way that would prevent the entire place from blowing up if I ever again decide to have the washer/dryer unit, computer, two electric kettles, iron, blowdryer, tv & dvd player, printer, epilator and vacuum on at the same time…
September 17th, 2005 at 1:05 pm
If only blackouts would occur in my school. But only the lectures would be cancelled though, I bet tutorials would still be on.
I don’t think I would ever want to leave home to study somewhere far away.
September 17th, 2005 at 7:47 pm
Oooh, I love it when the power goes out! Especially during school, heh. It would be better if it was storming outside though, I love watching storms.
And yup, I’m taking Russian this year as a second language :) I’m so so fasinated with the place, I just had to get myself somewhat involved with the culture, language etc! …I can’t roll my tounge though :/ Ah well, Lenin couldn’t either! Tehehe.

Hey, its Em (from M-L) you poor thing, dosen’t sound like your having a very good time! I like power-outs. Don’t sit in the dark & listen to sad songs though! Read by candlelight or something :) Did u get to go home? Lol
