The thing about blogging
April 22, 2006
I’ve been trying to pinpoint what it is that makes me prefer certain blogs to others. Of course, I have many favorite websites that I visit at least two or three times a week, but there are also a handful that I eagerly check at least once a day just in case.
Usually, it takes a long period of time for a site to reach daily status. Usually, when I come across a new site, I just quickly glance, and let it go. Over a period of time, if fate keeps bringing me back there, I usually become more and more anxious to check for updates.
Here’s what appears to be the general theme:
- The author can write at least pretty well.
- The design is sophisticated, as well as the domain name.
- It’s usually funny, or occasionally has little parts of wittiness.
- The author updates regularly. Meaning, they do not post every day one week and then abandon their site for a few months before coming back and apologizing for not updating. I mean, come on, if those kind of sites were reality shows they wouldn’t be getting anywhere.
- Lastly, the authors are more concerned with their lives than their websites. It’s common to mention the site once in a while, especially when you’ve added new stuff or reached a milestone, but constantly referring to the amount of comments you’re getting takes away from the really interesting stuff. It’s extremely easy to recognize when someone updates for the sole purpose of recording what’s going on in their lives rather than in their computer, and it’s more fun to read.
And basically everything here.

Well that rules me out then (from your daily websites) ^^!
1. I can´t write well. Possibly because english isn´t my 1st language so I do make rookie mistakes very often. And I can´t write very deep reviews of my life.
2. I´m not going to say anything about my layout design :P
3. Hmm, my humor isn´t for everybody.
4. Hehe guilty. I am bad at updating regularly.
5. Hmm, hmm.. I think I do mainly talk about my life and not about my site. But then again “my life” means–> movie, book etc. reviews and.. complaining about daily events. Which some might find boring.
Anyways. I see your point. And I do agree with you.

Yes, I think I follow the same standards. I love visiting sites where the author can actually construct decent sentences ;)

I enjoy reading blogs, especially those that could express themselves well. In addition, authors that are not afraid to blog anything under the sun. :)

Oops. I think I fall under the “author not updating regularly” category. I’ve got a habit of disappearing after a while. ;D That’s one habit that has got to go!

Our reading requirements are similar - good writing is so essential, but that’s only half of the equation that makes a good blog. I love stumbling onto sites where the most recent entries (and subsequently, archived ones) are infused with humour and interesting anecdotes.

I highly agree with you on the last point. It’s best when the person ensures the site lives for them rather than they living for the site.
In general, I agree with all of the points.
All in all, I enjoy blogs that have character. Rather, the writer can express themselves in a way that shows they have character. I believe there are a lot of writers with blogs with such characteristics out there, but are yet to be discovered.
I’ve been reading your blog for a little while now. I thought I’d delurk myself. Sorry I commented in a back entry, for this one really grabbed my attention!
