Viva insanity
July 23, 2008
I can’t stand gambling. I lost $20 the first day I was here and I am done. That got me a good 40 spins on a slot machine, which equals about five minutes, at the end of which I was all that’s it? Where do I get my refund? No refund? But I didn’t win anything.
So that’s it? I don’t understand.
Twenty dollars. That’s like a new shirt. Or 1/10 of an iPhone. Or enough gas to back out of my garage.
I did get to see Phantom, though, which was probably one of the best things I’ve ever done.
I’ve been waiting since my freshman year of college to see that show, which was the year the movie was released, which I saw twice in the theater, and proceeded to watch about forty seven more times when it came out on DVD.
I probably should have added that to Monday’s list.
I was pretty surprised about how true to the play the movie was (excluding Emmy Rossum’s crazy hotness, which was plastered all over the back of my dorm door. What?), and even though I was sitting there reciting the lines in my head as they happened, which was probably the most annoying I’ve ever been to myself, when that chandelier came crashing down, my face melted off.
On the way to the theater yesterday, as I sat next to my cab driver Mei Ma and twittered my excitement, he asked what I was doing, and, having no better explanation for Twitter, said, “Telling all of my friends what’s going on.” He replied, “Tell them I said hello.”
So, from the mouth of Mei Ma, there you go.

hey, random reader here… i hate gambling too!! i was in vegas in may and i think i spent $10 total on gambling and it felt like i was just flushing money away - sooo not fun!! the most fun i had gambling was in old vegas where the drinks are 99 cents and the slots are looser - your money lasts longer there! ;)

I hate gambling as well, but I seem to win every time I think I am going to end up with nothing. When I was in the Philippines last year, I spent my last night at a casino with the intent of spending all the extra pesos that I couldn’t change back. I won 5000 pesos that night.

Oh, sweetheart, no. No. Not the movie. No.
If you want, I can send you a (totally legally made *ahem*) video of the New York production with Thomas James O’Leary, who is wonderful. Or a (totally legally made *ahem*) CD of the Stockholm production, which, even if you don’t understand Swedish, has possibly the best vocals I’ve heard. Anthony Warlow in Australia is also very good. Let me know.

Robin G. - I know I know I know. Gerard’s voice leaves much to be desired, but I sort of have a soft spot for the movie since it was my first (cheapest) experience with Phantom. I would have loved to see a performance with Sarah Brightman.

you can’t win anything on a slot machine…gotta visit the tables. I’m kind of a snob when it comes to broadway stuff. I mean I live outside of NYC and don’t see how anywhere else (minus London of course) stacks up.

That was the vegas version of phantom, you should try and see it elsewhere too. It is worth it.

Oh Mei Ma, he’s such a nice guy!
Tell him I want my $20 back.

Denis - Well that’s just not fair.
Darren - Understandable.
shannon - Yeah, it was actually a little short than the original. I’m hoping Broadway comes to Pittsburgh sometime soon.
Chris - If I don’t get a refund, neither do you.

That first picture is awesome! Lots of color.
Phantom was the first musical I ever saw and since then I’ve been hooked to all musicals. Phantom converted me. It’s amazing!

My friends and I discovered in Vegas that the only way to successfully gamble without losing is to sit at the craps table, betting on black AND red. Then you can’t really lose, and they’ll bring you free drinks. I’m ashamed at the amount of time we did this…

I went “gambling” once, and I have no intention of ever going again. Must’ve been the least exciting thing I’ve ever done!
I put gambling in quotation marks coz I only put HK$2 into a slot machine, pulled once, nothing happened, and I’ve concluded for the rest of eternity that gambling is crap. :)
Oh, and Mei Ma? Hello!

I like to gamble on sports, or on poker in small doses, but there is no way I’d go anywhere close to a slot machine. Much, much too flashy, and it’s the fun equivalent of watching my dog walk
in circles.

My husband recently got a job offer to work for the Las Vegas Sun. Although we wouldn’t be living in Vegas, per se, it’s in the same county.
I’ve never really had a desire to visit there, much less move there since there isn’t a shred of interest in gambling in my body, but I must admit that the prospect of being able to see all those flashy shows is enticing.

You finally got to see Phantom! YAY!
